From Toronto's ravines....

... to Princeton's tow path

What, more school?!

The next stage in Margaret's academic career is about to begin--this time in New Jersey!

In the fall, Margaret will embark upon a PhD in the History of Science at Princeton--a true endurance test. She's heard good things about the scenic bike routes and forgiving surface of the canal tow path near campus, so undoubtedly she will explore the area during her study breaks.

Before she heads down into the bowels of Firestone Library, she wants to wish everyone good luck at Canadian Nationals in Sudbury.

From teaching in Swaziland...

... to studying in Toronto

School Days

Margaret has relocated to Toronto and is taking a break from racing...

So far, she is enjoying graduate school immensely (she is studying early modern history at the University of Toronto).

Margaret and Heather spent part of their summer in Swaziland, with a brief tour of South Africa to visit some duathlon friends (hi Jess! hi Sam!). A few photos can be found here -- if you're interested in further stories, don't hesitate to e-mail. Margaret will be happy to share tales about her experiences teaching French and Art at a Swazi primary school, not to mention getting chased around a golf course by monkeys, an unexpected sprint workout!

While it does not look likely that Margaret will be competing in many duathlons in the upcoming season, she'll be keeping up her running and riding, and is always looking for Torontonian training partners. All the best, and here's to a happy, healthy 2007!

"Change is good"

Publisher Stephen Fleck muses on the benefits of departing from the routine in the Feb. 2006 issue of OAT's Transitions magazine:

"If change is good, then let's make this year one of change... Change up your training routine... or maybe, take the year off completely and volunteer at races and/or for other causes... I guarantee you that when you do come back to triathlon [duathlon!], and you will, you will come back with a fresh and invigorated attitude and you will extend your years in the sport significantly." (Publisher's Note)

This message is particularly relevant for Margaret this year, as she is anticipating some significant changes: in the next few months she will be leaving her rare book job to go to graduate school, moving from NYC back to Toronto, and in between those stages, spending 6 weeks in southern Africa. All exciting plans, but unfortunately not that conducive to training or racing. So it is with equal parts regret and eagerness that she will be sitting out Canadian Nationals this coming weekend, and heading to Swaziland instead of Newfoundland in July.

Best of luck to everyone competing this season, and many, many thanks to all her friends and training partners in NYC and beyond. (As always, please keep checking in on this site; hopefully Margaret will be able to post the occasional travel update.)

"Human beings are adapted for endurance exercise. We evolved to be long-distance runners--
running a marathon is not a freak activity. We can outrun just about any other creature."
