2005 Race Results
2005 ITU World Duathlon Championships Newcastle, Australia (Sept. 25) 14th Elite Female, 2:21:41
On Sunday, Sept. 25th, Margaret was 14th across the line at her first elite-level international competition. She was the 3rd North American, behind top American Laura Bennett (nee Reback, 6th), and Kim Hager (12th) who encouraged her on certain tough hills midway through the bike leg. Great Britain swept the medals this year, with Michelle Dillon winning in 2:11:26. Margaret's 37:04 opening 10km saw her come into T1 in 12th; she rode the 40km's 30 hills in 1:22:27 (16th), finishing with a 20:12 5km (12th), good for 14th overall.
(The posted results include times for the 6 Under-23 Women who competed on the course at the same time as the Elite Women.)

Pine Barrens Autumn Duathlon Atsion, NJ (Sept. 10) 1st Female, 1:28:40
2nd Overall
Margaret's pre-Worlds tune-up was a success--she was the fastest woman of the day and finished 2nd overall, posting a 1:28:40 for the ~2.25-mile run/24-mile bike/2.3-mile run. While the run course is slightly different every year, thus making it impossible to compare her 2004 finishing time of 1:31:03, the 24-mile bike course is consistently measured, and Margaret was happy to see that her 1:00:53 split was more than a minute faster than the previous year.

NYRR 5-mile Club Champs New York, NY (Aug. 20) 31:14, 14th woman
In her first running race in ages, Margaret went out a little harder than she should have, but managed to hold on for 6:15/mile pace. She was the 4th CPTC woman to score, outkicking a Warren Street runner at the line (if only she could have caught one more-- CPTC finished 3rd by a single point).

CRCA Individual Time Trial New York, NY (Aug. 13) 1-lap time: results pending
Margaret's second 2-lap time trial of the season appeared to be on pace for a sub-30:00 20 km; despite a bobbled start, her first lap was somewhere in the high 14-minute range. The race was called off before the majority of the field could finish; we will update if any more information becomes available.

CRCA Women's Team Cup New York, NY (Aug. 7) 7th, Women's points race
For the first time ever, Schotte plays to her strength and successfully gets into a break; unfortunately, this was a race for the sprinters, so she got left behind on Cat Hill on every lap. Still, feeling strong after 30 miles, Schotte managed to cross the line in 4th place, a comparatively euphoric finish.

CRCA 2-Person Time Trial New York, NY (July 30) 44:38, first place women
Another early Saturday morning; this time, Margaret and LIPTON TEAmmate Caryl Gale managed to win the CRCA two-person Time Trial by a 2-second margin. The women's field was full of strong performances: Ellen Moses and Beth Renaud (Comedy Central/New Canaan Cyclery) and Ann-Marie Miller and Hannah Long (Metro Sanchez) crossed the line in 44:40 and 44:43 respectively. The winning time on the men's side was 38:34 for Greenberg and Auth (Foundation). Schotte and Gale's team placed 24th overall, and their lap times were 14:43, 14:39, and 15:16.

CRCA Individual Time Trial New York, NY (July 17) 30:20, tied for 2nd place W
Margaret rode without any speed or timing feedback from her computer (that's what happens when you forget to transfer the magnetic sensor to your borrowed wheels)... but she was pleased to find that she negative-split: from a 15:16 on lap 1 down to a 15:04 on lap 2. Congratulations to winner Ann-Marie Miller (29:17) and to fellow Lipton TEAmmate Kristen LaSasso (30:20), who tied with Margaret for 2nd.

Lou Maltese Memorial Race New York, NY (July 9) Cat. 4 Women, 6th place
Margaret finished 6th after spending a substantial portion of the 24-mile race towing the pack behind her... oops, better strategy next time!

Canadian Duathlon Nationals Ottawa, ON (June 18) 1st Elite Female
Margaret's first elite race--at the Ottawa Riverkeeper International Distance Duathlon--led to a satisfying victory--and a spot on the National Team for Worlds in Australia!

The weather was overcast but not rainy, with the wind becoming something of a factor on the flat 4-loop bike course. Margaret led the first run, holding even splits to run 38:35 (including transition?). A pack of four formed on the bike leg, where tactics slowed the pace (1:12:36 for 40 km). Margaret was able to pass two competitors in the first kilometer of the final run, picking up the pace to gain a 40-second lead (18:47 for 5 km, including transition). She crossed the line in 2:09:57. Age Group results are posted here.

Maple Ridge Memorial Day 5km Tulsa, OK (May 30) 1st Female, 14th Overall
Memorial Day weekend in Okalahoma was warm and sunny-- although luckily nowhere near the 90-degree weather of the previous week. After getting in a few training runs in the lovely local parks and great riverside path, Margaret was ready to test her 5km speed. She crossed the line in 18:54 (18:52 chip time)--3:47/mile for the hilly course. Jeff Lindsay recognized Margaret's CPTC singlet--the reputation of the Orange has obviously spread far and wide. Congrats to Jesse Boudiette on a solid effort, and here's to staying on the course next time!

Queens Biathlon Alley Pk, NY (May 15) 1st Female, 7th Overall
Margaret's first race of the year without rain! The 3-mile out-and-back run course was deceptively painful, but the newly repaved Cross Island Parkway was a joy to race on. Margaret narrowly missed tying the course record, which she set in 2003. She crossed the finish line in 1:26:39. The women's field was strong today, with Donna McMahon finishing in 9th place overall, and Mimi Boyle in 11th.

Bear Mountain Spring Classic Harriman St Pk, NY (April 30) 6th Cat. 4 Woman
Another chilly, rainy race... Margaret hung in there for the 3 loops of the mountain (42 miles) and thanks to her Lipton teammates, was in a good position for the finishing sprint -- 2 hours, 18 minutes and a few seconds was good for 6th. Special thanks to Anna Garnett of Dundas, ON, without whom this newby would never have had the strength of mind to chase back up to the pack in the fog.

CRCA Women's Cup Central Park, NYC (April 2) 11th Female

Margaret's first bike race: 5 laps of Central Park, or 30 miles, in the pouring rain. Margaret narrowly missed coming in the top ten, getting nipped at the line for 11th. (The pack's lap times were as follows: first 4 in 18:21, 17:17, 18:02, 17:42.)

Margaret did not compete in 2006.
